Mughal Empire Timeline in Indian History 

The Mughal Empire was an Islamic imperial power that ruled the Indian subcontinent from the early 16th to the mid-19th century. Here is a timeline of the main events in the history of the Mughal Empire:

  • 1526 - Babur, a Chaghatai Mongol prince, establishes the Mughal dynasty after defeating the Sultan of Delhi in the Battle of Panipat.

  • 1530-1556 - Babur's son, Humayun, becomes the second Mughal emperor and expands the empire's territory. He loses the empire to Sher Shah Suri but regains it after 15 years.

  • 1556-1605 - Emperor Akbar the Great, son of Humayun, becomes the third Mughal emperor and expands the empire's territory. He is known for his military campaigns and for his progressive policies towards the Hindu population.

  • 1605-1627 - Emperor Jahangir, son of Akbar, becomes the fourth Mughal emperor and continues the policies of his father.

  • 1628-1658 - Emperor Shah Jahan, son of Jahangir, becomes the fifth Mughal emperor and continues the policies of his father. He is known for building the iconic Taj Mahal, a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

  • 1658-1707 - Emperor Aurangzeb, son of Shah Jahan, becomes the sixth Mughal emperor and pursues a policy of religious intolerance and imposes high taxes on the Hindu population.

  • 1719-1748 - Emperor Muhammad Shah becomes the eighth Mughal emperor, he faces challenges from various regional powers and the empire continues to decline.

  • 1748-1754 - Emperor Ahmad Shah Durrani becomes the ninth Mughal emperor, he faces challenges from various regional powers and the empire continues to decline.

  • 1754-1803 - Emperor Shah Alam II becomes the tenth Mughal emperor, he faces challenges from various regional powers and the empire continues to decline.

  • 1803-1857 - Emperor Bahadur Shah II becomes the last Mughal emperor, he faces challenges from the British East India Company and the empire becomes a shadow of its former self.
